Buying a tractor-trailer is only part of the investment. For the truck-trailer combination to operate, you also need a semi-trailer. And this raises the question: Is it better to buy your own semi-trailer on the open market or to lease one through the XCargo Partner program?
For a carrier, it’s not just the purchase price that matters. Additional costs are also important: liability and comprehensive insurance, tires, maintenance, the risk of downtime, and tied-up capital.
In this article, you'll learn:
- What hidden costs are associated with buying your own semi-trailer: why the purchase price is just the beginning of your expenses, and how tires, maintenance, and insurance affect your budget.
- What are the key features of the XCargo Partner rental program: what are the monthly rates for domestic and international semi-trailers, and what is included in those rates?
- What are the key differences in terms of cost and risk: a comparison of leasing versus purchasing a semi-trailer on the used market.
- When does it make sense to buy a semi-trailer, and when is it better to rent one: how cash flow, a steady stream of orders, and in-house freight forwarding affect the ultimate profitability of the decision.

Semi-Trailer Rental at XCargo Partner
Semi-trailer rentals through the XCargo Partner program are available exclusively to carriers who partner with XCargo Partner. The minimum contract term is 3 months, which allows carriers to test the partnership model without having to purchase their own semi-trailer.
KOEGEL 2018/2019 semi-trailers are available for domestic transport at the following price:
1,495 PLN net per month
The following KRONE semi-trailers are available for international transport:
| Semi-trailer | Yearbook | Net monthly price |
| KRONE | 2021 | 500 euros |
| KRONE | 2022 | 550 euros |
| KRONE | 2023 | 600 euros |
The rental price includes comprehensive liability and collision insurance, tire maintenance—including replacement with new tires when the tread depth falls below the required standard—and a semi-trailer ready for use.
In addition, carriers participating in the XCargo Partner program can take advantage of preferential service terms at the Mostki Service Center.

How much does a used semi-trailer cost?
Buying your own used semi-trailer means a higher upfront cost. Sample prices for KOEGEL semi-trailers from 2018/2019 on the used market can range from approximately 40,000 to 50,000 PLN net, but the final price depends on the model year, technical condition, equipment, service history, and current availability.
For newer KRONE semi-trailers from 2021–2023, which are often used in international transport, the purchase price may be higher. Here, too, the price depends on the specific unit, configuration, technical condition, and terms of sale.
Insurance must be added to the purchase price. Third-party liability insurance for the semi-trailer alone may be relatively inexpensive, but for a realistic comparison, it’s also worth considering comprehensive insurance. For more comprehensive coverage, the cost can be approximately several thousand zlotys per year, depending on the value of the semi-trailer, the scope of coverage, the deductible, the claims history, and the insurer.
Another expense is tires. A set of 6 tires for a semi-trailer can cost anywhere from a few thousand to over a dozen thousand zlotys, depending on the brand, tire class, and place of purchase. If the carrier owns the semi-trailer, this cost is borne by the carrier. With XCargo Partner rentals, tire maintenance is included in the rental terms.
Comparing Semi-Trailer Costs: Rent or Buy?
| Element | XCargo Partner Rental | My own semi-trailer from the market |
| Entry fee | No semi-trailer purchase | approximately several tens of thousands of zlotys or more |
| Monthly cost | starting at 1,495 zł net or 500–600 euros | contingent on a purchase, lease, or loan |
| OC/AC | included in the rental price | on the carrier's side |
| Tires | included in the rental price in accordance with the tread depth standard | on the carrier's side |
| Service | Preferential terms at the Mostki Service Center | on the carrier's side |
| Risk of downtime | limited | on the owner's side |
| Capital | is not frozen in the trailer | frozen in the equipment |
| Access to Orders | as part of the XCargo Partner collaboration | the carrier arranges it on its own |
Which is more cost-effective?
Owning a semi-trailer can be a good solution for a carrier who has regular customers, an in-house freight forwarding department, and the assurance that the equipment will be used regularly. In that case, the purchase can be part of the fleet’s long-term growth.
Renting a semi-trailer through XCargo Partner is a good option when a carrier wants to minimize startup costs, avoid tying up capital, and not have to bear all the additional expenses. The price includes the semi-trailer, liability and comprehensive insurance, tire maintenance, and access to preferential service.
It’s also worth considering this choice from the perspective of cash flow. When purchasing a semi-trailer, a carrier commits funds right from the start, and additional costs may arise during operation. With the leasing model, costs are more predictable, and funds can be allocated to the company’s day-to-day needs: fuel, tractor leasing, driver salaries, or the expansion of the fleet.
For a company that owns a tractor-trailer and is looking for steady work, renting a semi-trailer may be a safer option than purchasing used equipment on the open market. This is especially true when the carrier does not have its own freight forwarding division and wants to focus on carrying out shipments rather than searching for jobs on its own.

Own or Leased Semi-Trailer – Summary
When deciding between buying and renting a trailer, it’s worth comparing more than just the purchase price and the monthly rental cost. What matters is the total cost of ownership: insurance, tires, maintenance, the risk of downtime, and the capital tied up.
Through the XCargo Partner program, carriers can rent a trailer tailored to their specific needs: a KOEGEL 2018/2019 for domestic transport or a KRONE 2021–2023 for international transport. This offer is available exclusively to carriers participating in the XCargo Partner program.
